Village life

Published: 24/05/2021 By Gillian Boden

Thames Ditton has managed to maintain all the charm of village life you won’t find anywhere this close to London. It’s less than 40 minutes by train to London Waterloo. With individual shops, great schools, gourmet pubs and eateries on the river, cricket on the village green, a village hall and even a small local theatre with a lively programme of entertainment. Situated next to the River Thames within close proximity to the marvellous Hampton Court Palace & Gardens, Thames Ditton maintains a sense of community not often found these days. Apart from the regular train service to London Waterloo, it’s a short distance to Surbiton, Esher or Kingston upon Thames. There’s a wide range of houses on offer from quaint cottages to much larger family homes with generous sized gardens.

Schools & Nurseries – Thames Ditton boasts highly sought after state infant and junior schools plus the ever popular Esher College for 6th form. There are a number of great nurseries including Busy Bees and Colet’s. And for the private sector popular choices include Hampton Court House School, Weston Green for primary nearby Surbiton High Prep and Girls School and the co-ed Kingston Grammar School to name but a few.

Pubs & eateries – beautiful riverside pubs offering outdoor dining such as The Albany, with views across the river to Hampton Court Palace, The Old Swan situated by the bridge across the river to Thames Ditton Island, a pedestrian only island home to many river front homes,  The George & Dragon, a traditional English-stye pub in the heart of the village , Ditto, an Italian restaurant with a wonderful courtyard garden, Maisie Thai serving delicious, freshly prepared authentic Thai food. Or for something more casual, try Nice Buns Cafe for great lunch choices. Don’t miss the monthly Farmers Market held in the village hall carpark next to the library.

Sports & Leisure facilities – Thames Ditton Tennis Club – boasting grass courts, Colets Health & Fitness Centre – a private members club boasting a 25m Pool, gym, squash courts, kids clubs and a beauty and hair salon, Thames Ditton Cricket Club situated on the picturesque Giggs Hill Green overlooked by characterful cottages or Thames Dittons Skiff & Punting Club next to the Albany Pub & Restaurant by the Thames or for the golfers there’s Thames Ditton Golf Club right next to Marney’s Village Inn. A village pub overlooking a duckpond and the handsome white tower of All Saints church. Old Kingstonians hockey club play at Ditton Field in Thames Ditton.

The great outdoors – a short walk or cycle to the Thames path leading to Kingston upon Thames and beyond in one direction and towards Walton upon Thames passing Molesey Rowing Club and Molesey Cricket Club situated right next to the river in the other direction. Access to Hampton Court Palace and Gardens, the beautiful Royal Parks of Bushy Park and Home Park are all within walking or cycling distance of Thames Ditton. And don’t miss the herds of deer in Bushy and Home Park!
